What is the next chapter of your career going to read like? With social distancing still in place, companies are getting creative and doing their interviewing online. Recruiters and Managers are getting more and more comfortable with using technology to help make hiring decisions. I’d like to take this opportunity to share a few tips that you may find useful.
Familiarize yourself with technology
Don’t be shy of having a video call with your recruiter. Test and get comfortable with tools like Skype, Zoom, Google Hangouts, WebEx, etc. You can download the app for free and don’t need to have an account. Meet with your recruiter via a video call or even face-time to chat with the recruiter.
Set expectations
Talk to your recruiter and share how you would like to work with them. Let them know what the ideal role will be or what you want to achieve from this move.
You should be the focus
Find a well-lit area or even consider facing a window during your video call. This way the interviewer is able to see you clearly and make eye contact with you. Remember to look at the camera and not the person on the screen.
Be prepared and take control
Go over the job description beforehand. Highlight all the things you have done from the job description. Emphasize on what you have done that relates to the job. Ask questions about items missing from your experience that may be on the job description. This shows the interviewer that you came prepared.
Showcase your problem-solving skills
Remember, managers are looking for people that can hit the ground running but they also know that unless you have worked in that environment, you will have a learning curve. Research the company you are interviewing with, learn about the problems they are looking to solve and showcase how you are qualified to handle and can bridge any gaps. Don’t be afraid to share examples of how you were able to learn on the job.
