Disability Pride Month

July is Disability Pride Month, a time to honor the history, achievements, experiences, and struggles of the disability community. This month-long celebration commemorates the passing of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in July 1990. The ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including employment, transportation, housing, and access to government programs and services. 

The concept of Disability Pride is rooted in intersectional identity politics and social justice principles. It aims to address negative perceptions and biases about disabilities. Disability Pride challenges ableism and social stigma, drawing inspiration from the same social theories that support LGBT Pride and Black Pride. This movement celebrates the history of the Disability Rights movement and acknowledges people with disabilities as valuable contributors to society.
